Palio di SienaThe Palio
of Siena is an exciting folkloric horse race held twice a year – on
July 2nd
and August 16th
– in Piazza del Campo. The protagonists are the 17 contrade
into which Siena is divided. The race involves circling Piazza del
Campo three times. On these occasions a thick layer of dirt is laid
in the square, so that the horses can run more easily; nevertheless
treacherous falls are not unusual, in particular at the “turn of
San Martino”, which is considered the most difficult part of the
track. Only one contrada
wins after a frenzied race, during which blows under the belt are not
uncommon. At the end of the race, the winner celebrates its victory
with a party.
