Welcome to Siena: the travel guide to Siena city and surroundingsSituated 322 metres above sea level in the heart of Tuscany, this hilly town has maintained its medieval structure unaltered; its narrow streets, squares and aristocratic palaces are rich in history.
Siena, which UNESCO has declared World Heritage Site, is universally renown for its artistic heritage and for its Palio.
The famous Piazza del Campo is one of Siena’s most important monuments; every year the shell-shaped square hosts the Palio. The Palazzo Comunale, built between 1298 and 1310, the Torre del Mangia, which is one of the tallest ancient towers in Italy, and the Cappella di Piazza, built in 1352 to give thanks to the Virgin Mary for having protected the town from the plague, open onto the square, at the centre of which is the Fonte Gaia, Siena’s first public fountain.
The Romanesque-Gothic Duomo of Siena, the Basilica dell’Osservanza on the Capriola hill, the Basilica di Santa Maria dei Servi on the hill dominating Valdimontone, the Basilica di San Domenico in Via Camporegio and the Basilica di San Francesco in Piazza San Francesco are some of Siena’s most important churches.
The Museo Archeologico Nazionale in Piazza del Duomo, the Museo dell’Opera Metropolitana del Duomo next to the Duomo, the Palazzo Comunale and the Museo Civico in Piazza del Campo, the Pinacoteca Nazionale hosted in Palazzo Brigidi and Palazzo Buonsignori in Via San Pietro and the Ospedale di Santa Maria della Scala opposite the Duomo are well worth a visit.
